Plasmodium falciparum in Ancient Egypt

چکیده
peat analysis (MLVA) as described (1,3–5). Multilocus sequence typing profi les of these strains were identical to the type strain B. microti CCM 4915T and strain CCM 4916. MLVA showed that these strains also clustered with B. microti strains CCM 4915T and CCM 4916, with identical panel 1 and panel 2A genotypes but a different panel 2B genotype. In summary, we successfully isolated B. microti from soil samples collected at the same site 7 years after primary isolation of this novel species from common voles. B. microti could still be isolated from the same soil samples 6 months after storage at 4°C. This fi nding indicates long-term survival of B. microti in soil; thus, soil might function as a reservoir of infection. Identifi cation of B. microti as a potential soil bacterium is consistent with Brucella spp. whole genome sequencing data, in particular with the genome sequence of B. suis, which exhibits fundamental similarities with plant pathogens such as Agrobacterium spp. and Rhizobium spp. (6). Whether soil is the primary habitat of B. microti or other vectors, such as nematodes, remains to be investigated.

متن کاملClinical Pharmacology of the Antimalarial Chloroquine in Children and Their Mothers
Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium knowlesi are the parasites that infect humans. Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax cause most of the malarial infections worldwide. Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium knowlesi are susceptible to chloroquine. Chloroquine was the world's most widely used antim...
متن کاملC1 Inhibitor, C3 Activator, IgG, IgA, and IgM Titers in Nigerian Sickle Cell Disease Patients with Plasmodium falciparum
Background: Sickle cell disease (HbSS) is a major health problem in Nigeria and ma-laria has been implicated as a leading cause of morbidity/mortality in sickle cell disease patients. Few reasons were put forward to explain the observed morbidity/mortality of HbSS subjects due to Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) malaria. Objectives: To determine the level of immunoglobulin classes (IgM, Ig...
متن کاملMolecular Identification of Falciparum Malaria and Human Tuberculosis Co-Infections in Mummies from the Fayum Depression (Lower Egypt)
Due to the presence of the lake Quarun and to the particular nature of its irrigation system, it has been speculated that the Fayum, a large depression 80 kilometers south-west of modern Cairo, was exposed to the hazards of malaria in historic times. Similarly, it has been speculated that, in the same area, also human tuberculosis might have been far more widespread in the antiquity than in its...
متن کاملGenotyping of C and F Regions of Plasmodium Falciparum EBA-175 in South-East of Iran
Abstract Background and Objective: The Plasmodium falciparum EBA-175, via Sialic acid dependent glycophorin A, binds to red blood cells and thus plays a critical role in cell invasion. Some part of second allele in its gene encoding in FCR-3 (Section F) and CAMP (Section C) can be found. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum EBA-175KD alleles in southeastern I...
متن کاملMolecular Evidence on Changing Pattern of Mixed Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax Infections during Year-Round Transmission of Malaria in Chahbahar, Iran
Mixed malaria infections, Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax, are suspected to occur at a greater frequency than is detected by conventional light microscopy. In order to determine the year round pattern of transmission and the frequency of mixed infections in malaria endemic area, we carried out a prospective comparison of diagnosis by conventional light microscopy and nested PCR in Chahbahar ...
